Chicago based queer hip-hop trio Banjee Report are a party, podcast and performance group. “We are an audio periodical of sorts, reporting through sound the world as we see it,” Report member aCe told us. Those smooth lyrics and deep baritone flows have appeared on stages in LA and NYC — and for the first time, this Saturday, in San Francisco.

We caught up with aCe and the rest of the Report, Mister Wallace and dj 1WO, for a brief email interview on the true meaning of banjee, their photo op with performance artist boychild, and their show this weekend at 120 Minutes.

AHDM4U: The term banjee has been used in ballroom culture for decades. How do y’all define the word?

ACE: Banjee as a word or phrase resonates deeply with The Children. Historically in the ballroom scene it helped us self actualize that “queer” is a generalized notion that allows mainstream society to lump us all into one category. We were able to be and celebrate the fact that we came from the hood and our aesthetic was recognized and celebrated. So banjee to me, as a word, allows me to give a nod to history and culture while continuing its tradition of the present day “hood and queer” representation.

MISTER WALLACE: Banjee means real.

DJ 1WO: It’s about the crosssection of a strong hip-hop influence/background combined with our own personal truths and realities. We have enough in common to walk this path together, but enough differences to make the trip exciting.

AHDM4U: Whenever I Google Image search Banjee Report this incredible image of y’all w/ boychild comes up. Tell us about that moment.

1WO: That was at Empty Bottle after our show with her, GTW and Mykki Blanco. She was added to the lineup last minute. aCe was super excited. At the time I didn’t really understand how to receive her art. I had only seen it online. That was right after she did the Hood By Air runway performance. Once I got to experience it and then spent that night hanging out I was able to connect with her and it made things come together for me. boychild is dope. I look forward to the chance to hang out with her again.

AHDM4U: I had a chat with DJ and producer Jacob Sperber and he said y’all were his spirit animal. Which got me thinking, what is your spirit animal?

ACE: Jacob Sperber is my G. For him to say that about us is an incredible honor cuz I have mad respect for my G. I would say my spirit animal is Juliana Huxtable Ladosha at the moment.

MISTER WALLACE: Leyomi Mizrahi x Mystique

DJ 1WO: I like this question. I feel like there’s no wrong answer. My spirit animal is probably some hybrid shit. Like backwoods, but amazon, but less, and then more, and then extra and then real more demure … and apparently elusive af.

AHDM4U: What can SF expect to see and hear at your show this Saturday?

MISTER WALLACE: Fags Really Rap

ACE: San Francisco can expect to accompany us on a journey to Triangulum Australe.  See you soon.

DJ 1WO: The most.

EXTREMELY HIGH FUNCTIONING SLUTS Our favorite kinky party promoter has taken it to new heights by somehow convincing fancy wine bar Tank18 to let him host a daytime party there called Glory Hole. Yes, that angel DJ Robin Malone Simmons and freak drag babe Amoania are performing. Yes, the flyer features a wine barrel with cum dripping out of it.

It’s taking place on Sunday to coincide with the amazing Up Your Alley, the local’s version of mega-event Folsom Street Fair, so you basically have reasons to party all weekend. Peep our boo Marke B.’s guide for the full list of UYA-related perv parades this week.
