WKND UPDATE :: WHAT TO DO WHEN LEATHER’S NOT YOUR LOOK :: BAY AREA SEPT. 26-30

Folsom Street Fair, we realize, is not for everyone, and not for all the time. Sometimes, you need to take a break to support indie media, milk a goat, take in an art talk. For these moments, and for this weekend in the Bay Area, this list.

SF PROGRESSIVE MEDIA CENTER LAUNCH PARTY Remember when a corporation from Canada that also dabbles in building oil refineries took over most of San Francisco print media? Right, that happened when David Black’s shadowy SF Print Media Company bought the SF Bay Guardian, SF Examiner, SF Weekly, and half of the Bay Area Reporter — and it culminated with the messy ouster of 30-year San Francisco Bay Guardian editor Tim Redmond. (Oh, and the semi-voluntary fleeing of one of your smart and talented AHDM4U editors.) It’s safe to say that we need more options when it comes to where we get our local news. Re-enter Redmond, who has a plan to start a non-profit daily news website. Come out to support the project at El Rio today, where local politicos will extoll the virtue of a free press.

THURSDAY // EL RIO // 6-9PM // $25 DONATION // MORE

EAT REAL FESTIVAL Graze like a gentle bovine through the aisles of local food and drink purveyors at this rad three-day locavore fest in Oakland, where none of the plates are more than $5. While you rest your jaw you can also learn how to milk a goat, make a seed bomb, or enter your prize pickles in one of the event’s many contests.

FRIDAY-SUNDAY // JACK LONDON SQUARE, OAKLAND // TIMES VARY // FREE // MORE

OS GEMEOS MURAL UNVEILING Street art fans will swoon to know that Brazil’s power duo Os Gemeos, whose 2012 Boston work was called by some a “Rorshach test for bigots and idiots”, will be doing a muralist residency at Mid-Market’s Luggage Store Gallery through the beginning of October. One of their works is already soaring on the side of a building above our city’s center street. Come party tonight in celebration — coolest dude in town Thrasher legend-guitarist Tommy Guerrero will be playing with his band the Got Gettas.

Look for the new Os Gemeos’ piece above Market and Sixth Streets

SATURDAY // LUGGAGE STORE // 7-11PM // $20 DONATION // MORE

XARA THRUSTRA RELEASE PARTY FINE this is in LA, but were it not for the 1,000 other things happening, we’d be at this performance art gathering/BBQ/visual art show/magazine release. For more on Xara Thrustra’s import and amaze, check out Erick Lyle’s glowing SF Bay Guardian writeup on the last release cycle.

SATURDAY // LOS ANGELES // 7-10PM // FREE // MORE

MICKALENE THOMAS A friend recently turned us onto this multimedia artist whose work is a must for anyone who takes heart in Solange Knowles mix-and-match print wardrobe and general swagger. In fact, Mickalene Thomas is good friends with Bey’s little sis — Solange’s “Losing You” music video was inspired by the artist’s work and its party scenes were even shot right inside Thomas’ Brooklyn studio. Today, Thomas comes to SFAI to discuss her use of Matisse and Pop Art influences to mess with our traditional notions of beauty and glamour.
