WKND UPDATE :: BAY AREA // LOS ANGELES :: OCT 17-20

In LA they drink less (they have to drive home), and actually make money commercializing the subculture they lay claim to/doing their art. It is exciting! And nice to visit, if not live! And we know some superlative individuals doing some things there, so AHDM4U is roadtripping this weekend, and bringing you back tidings in the form of a feature in later-this-month’s Travel Issue. (ANNOUNCING THE TRAVEL ISSUE)

It’s a little sad though, because there are so many cute things happening in the Bay. Nooo not Treasure Island Music Festival. Here they are, plus an LA event to make us feel better:

VIOLA DI GRADO Italy gave birth to a bestselling novelist who is 26 and wears gothy cat ears in her publicity photos. We swoon for the very idea of Viola Di Grado, and the well-hyped lit star is doing a free reading through Litquake tonight.

THE WANDERING MOON You need no excuse to sit in the leafy embrace of the Tenderloin National Forest on a late summer night, but here is one: queer rock god Brontez Purnell, spoken word minx Kat Marie Yoas and others reading their guts in a Litquake event hosted by Michelle Tea with VEGAN SNAXX.

AFRO SURREAL LITCRAWL You know about the Afrosurreal movement? Oh, AHDM4U reader, you’ll love:

“San Francisco, the most liberal and artistic city in the nation, has one of the nation’s most rapidly declining black urban populations. This is a sign of a greater illness that is chasing out all artists, renegades, daredevils, and outcasts. No black people means no black artists, and all you yet-untouched freaks are next. Only freaky black art — Afro-Surreal art — in the museums, galleries, concert venues, and streets of this (slightly) fair city can save us!”

Go see a reading by the leading artists in Afrosurreal, including D. Scott Miller and Garret Caples, in a video store’s basement.

SATURDAY // 7:15PM // FREE // LOST WEEKEND VIDEO // MORE

BROWNTOURAGE PRESENTS Surely in these (web) pages we have mentioned that we love this syndicate a little more than most everything else, yes? Photogs/coders/caller outers of all sorts of pop culture oppression Tonia B. and Hawa Arsala throw their first party proper tonight, an after-party for Treasure Island Music Fest they say. A DJ set featuring all female rap tracks. Sensual acrobatics by the superlative Body Waves. Go.
