Chi Chi photos by Shot in the City
I was born by immaculate conception and raised as a Los Angeles makeup artist. Years ago, I made the move from the City of Angels to San Francisco, the Land of Queens. What I found here was incredible — a mother in Lil Miss Hot Mess, aunties in Dia Dear and Amoania, and a whole community that accepted me for my wild child drag queen loving ways. Nightlife dreams, that’s where I truly thrive. And lucky you — now I’m ready to share what I’ve learned as a glamour queen. Welcome to Chi Chi’s Beauty Salon.
Valentine’s Day is coming up. For my first AHDM4U column, here below are my picks for this season’s colors of the moment — and beauty gifts that’ll win over any boo. Ew, Chi Chi! Get it. Love it. HASHTAG ME.
Velvetines Lip Stain in Pink Velvet
A super-bright hot pink that goes on as a gloss, but quickly dries to a matte finish. Essentially Velvetines function as lip stain, so they won’t come off when you’re eating or drinking and out on the town. The brand makes three shades, but the Pink Velvet is by far my favorite because of its vivid pigment. When you see it on you’ll know why I choose it #drooling #dyingoverit // GET IT
Rihanna for Viva Glam lip gloss and lipstick
MAC and Rihanna have graced us once again! This time around we’ve been blessed with a new poppy-hued frost lipstick-gloss duo with a blue undertone. It just got released on January 21st, so hurry up and get it because it will sell out fast. When trying this duo on the other day, I realized you have to get both products to achieve the look that RiRi is going for — the gloss alone is a much more cool tone. Lovely, but missing the oomph you get with the pair. // GET IT
Chanel Vamp lip and nail color
For my vintage vamps wanting more of a darker color, an oldie-but-goodie: Chanel’s Vamp No. 18 in lip and nail. When this shade first came out in 1994 as the goth-grunge scene was getting big, it sold in huge numbers. “If I had a penny for everyone that wanted Vamp I’d be rich,” commented Chanel rep Judy Biasalli at the time. “In my 11 years with Chanel I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s literally flying out of the stores.” Chanel brought this product back in the 2000s and baby, I think it’s here to stay. // GET IT
Savage Flour cupcake bouquet
Roses are red, violets are blue, this bouquet is cute and edible too. Savage Flour, a pastry catering company based in SF, has the cutest Valentine’s Day bunch ever – it’s a bouquet of cupcake roses! They are so fucking cute. I can’t with them. You can order them in half or full dozens and there’s free delivery in SF – genius! // GET IT
Etta + Billie ginger-orange body scrub
Hi skin care product lovers, introducing new SF-based company Etta + Billie. Founder Alana Rivera produces sustainable, hand-crafted, natural skin and body products — my favorite from her is this body scrub in delicious ginger-orange. All of her products are good, affordable and available in local Bay Area retail shops, like Heath Ceramics’ gorgeous Mission District showroom. // GET IT
I love DIY gifts because they’re cheap ‘n’ easy, fun to make and get you even more brownie points when you give them to your special someone. So make me something, hello! Here’s a tip to get you started: you can do anything with mason jars. You can spray paint them and decorate them to make storage containers for makeup – they’re beautiful for brushes, glosses and polishes. You can use them as candle holders, candles, you can even decorate them with candy inside for your lovely sweetheart. Get creative with your jar! I can’t tell you every thing to do.
