Drag queens, as AHDM4U readers are well aware, run San Francisco. But it takes a lot to live a life of hip pads and high profile wardrobe changes — you need family to make it work. Hence the drag reliance on houses, the familial networks that provide mentoring and makeup tutorials to up-and-coming queens, and a sense of community and tradition to performers at any age.
Tomorrow at the opening of Work More, the yearly art series that pairs drag queens with creatives from another medium, some of SF’s most prominent drag families are getting their gallery moment. Artists Ryan Crowder and Seven Mitchell (a performer who is also responsible for creating high fashion latex looks) used needlepoint — a craft form traditionally associated with females — and the familiar shape of the homey family tree to explore the queer clan traditions in drag.

For the project, they set the House of More and the House of Glitter to fabric. “It was challenging to try to make everyone feel represented and simultaneously wrestle with house membership politics,” Crowder wrote to AHDM4U. “For each house, certain people are included while others are not officially a part of the group, the nuances in these relationships are complicated and took time and edits to figure out. It also was nearly impossible to perfectly spell all the awesome drag queen names.”
Work More 2014 — the sixth year of the series — is focused on visual arts and will feature a piece inspired by women’s collectives of the 1970s headed up by Kolmel WithLove, a Leigh Bowery video moment with Vain Hein and Robbie Sweeney and a ton of other cool stuff. The opening night party will duh, feature drag performances but the show is up through the closing party on April 24.
