Blood Sweat and Queers was the exceptionally named queer dance party where I first heard San Francisco based DJ davO. Set in the windowless basement of China Town dive Lipo Lounge, the monthly provided an evening of hot, sweaty grinding to heavy bass music pulsating from your ear lobes to your nether regions. davO mixed Jersey house beats and would alternate to playing an electronic drum machine during DJ Bunnystyle’s sets.
Raised in the Annapolis-Baltimore area, davO has been playing percussion and rapping since he was 15 years old. Former co-frontman of rap rock group Jepatteo, davO has toured and opened for Cypress Hill and Fishbone — and played Warped Tour in ’99 and ’00.
BSQ has been gone for five years, and nowadays davO is busy with electro rap duo Double Duchess, and he’s the producer and resident DJ for San Francisco’s cutest queer hip hop party Swagger Like Us. Obvs I’m biased towards his genius — I also co-produce SLU.
I’m a fan, and I’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity to have davO drop a mix on y’all. What better time than SF Pride month!
I asked davO to say a few words on his exclusive mixtape for AHDM4U:
I wanted to put together a collection of genres I like to play at any given Swagger Like Us. I also have an affinity for anything heavy on the percussion element, so I sprinkled in some dancehall and Latin beats. Since Summer is in full swing, I wanted to keep it light and party ready (but I usually gravitate towards that anyways.)
I’m not going to lie, this mix had me twerking at my desk. davO just started a new Swagger Like Us Soundcloud where he and his SF collaborator (and my partner) DJ Boyfriend will be dropping new original remixed tracks and DJ sets for y’all.
Yasss! DJ Boyfriend and I have been producing tracks, in addition to DJing together. I love producing dance tracks, and unlike with song writing in Double Duchess, Boyfriend and I have more flexibility in what we can do with using other artists’ vocals, i.e. remixes, edits. So, I’m excited to have another production outlet, and I’m excited to be collaborating with my DJ partner in crime as well.
