VISUAL LEARNING :: 5 MUSIC VIDEOS YOU HAVE TO SEE

By Kelly Lovemonster and Cat Donohue

DDM :: COME THRU

Rapper DDM spits melodic verses in a Grace Jones graphic t-shirt, bright gold grill and the freshest hi-top fade we’ve seen since Kid and Play in “Come Thru”, the Baltimore rapper‘s newest single and music video. Some of our fave video elements here are the IG-like filter (we would guest Toaster or Nashville), DDM’s anime eyes and obvs the beautiful B’more ladies that flank him with bright lips, doorknocker earrings and long flowing ponytails.

PERSIA w/ DADDIE$ PLA$TIK :: STOP BEING POOR

Daddie$ Pla$tik does this thing where they take all our class warfare-related anxieties and make them look beautiful, in an appropriately unhealthy and grotesque way. In “Stop Being Poor”, meant as a follow-up to the group’s highly viral “Google Google Apps Apps”, the group takes the Bay Area’s gentrification-related stress and makes it into a large, Africa-bashing, champagne-soaked, nautical joke. Bonus points for the mirror face worn by Vain Hein (who also edited the video), the fact that they found a friend with a boat to shoot on and the pretty kitty.

FKA TWIGS :: TWO WEEKS

This Gloucestersire recording artist just released one of the most gorgeous single shot music videos ever. “Two Weeks” is a sexy space jam heralding the impending August release of her new album. For it, FKA Twigs has essentially one upped Michael Jackson and given us the unsettling, Iman-obsessed version of “Remember the Time” that we always wanted. It was directed by Australian auteur Nabil, who also blessed us with Nicki’s “Lookin’ Ass”, another video hyper-focused on the beauty of its singer.

DUCKWRTH :: TRAVEL

Look at those boots and tell us that Duckwrth doesn’t rep the Bay’s eclectic sense of style like only a rapper bred here can do. Only … babe, if you’re really trying to get rid of those kicks, next time leave them on our lawn. Transcendent Emerge Issue chanteuse Queens D Light makes a woodland dream sequence cameo — is she building on the huntress mystique she started with “Love Pistol”?

PARIS BANG BANG :: FRESH

From Cat’s recent DF drag queen article for last week’s Pride Issue:

“Paris Bang Bang is the coolest drag queen in the city,” writes Paris Bang Bang, a.k.a. Paris Meneses after I fall in love with the queen’s lo-fi club anthem “Fresh”. “She’s the party girl that everyone wants to go out with. She’s a good time, an unforgettable night.” I’m not arguing. “Fresh” take place in the world of a ringleader DF gay club kid. Watch the video and you’ll kind of get what a night out is like here – a lot of strutting down the sidewalk en masse, stops at the OXXO convenience store, vamping in the bathroom, packed and sweaty clubs of course and that moment when you realize the Metro is finally open again after a long night.
