CREEPY SEXY COOL :: CHICO MALO IS THE NEW MASC (NSFW)

It made sense that Mexico City multimedia artist Chico Malo would want to debut the trailer for his experimental short film “Clavel” for AHDM4U readers. For one, the piece features the masturbatory talents of one of our fave erotic auteurs Damien Moreau (who Kelly Lovemonster interviewed in this issue.) For another, y’all would most definitely appreciate Chico Malo’s quest to find room for masculinity in the anti-sexist movement. Below, the artist talks about his interest in “being a man” — in a non-oppressive, feminist sense.

Clavel is the Spanish translation for the carnation flower. Red carnations symbolize masculine energy in magic. The piece is an audiovisual poetry film about shared experiences of lost love, freedom, sex magic, queer identity and masculinism.

After watching the trailer, my roommate told me that he felt like I was trying to scare him with sex, which I thought was the best reaction I could have hoped for. I am trying to scare people with sex, yes, but I do it because I believe in the power of visuals, language and music as ways of generating cathartic experiences that elevate the spirit to where it needs to be. I believe this is magic.

My Chico Malo project is a feminist approach to masculinity. It is a version of myself that I’ve been waiting to explore for a while now. In the past, my work has been focused on women and my understanding of femininity. I’ve always been aware of my privilege as a man in our society. Now, I am ready to explore my own sense of masculinity outside of patriarchal values. I know that we still have a long way to go in terms of equality for women but I think that now is the perfect time to start a conversation about what masculinity can mean inside of feminism.

As a queer man, I’m expected to be a lot of things that are not who I actually am. I want to break free from all the bullshit with each film, celebrating all the painful memories that got me to the positive place I am in right now. I’m also hoping to do the same for anyone who has the time and openness to experience a little change of perspective. I want to use Chico Malo as a way to reclaim a new identity for men through multimedia art and poetry.
